BASICALLY WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN

Noriko,

I'm hoping that when this meeting is over, I'll be able to come back to the embassy ship and burn this letter, but if you're reading this I presume I wasn't able to for one reason or another. I will only hope that if so, it's because matters have gotten complicated and require me to stay away for a long period of time and not because I am no longer alive to.

There's a chance I might not be. It's not one I like to think of.

Please take care of Min for me. He's the only person in this world to me more precious than you and I worry what he'll do to himself without me. Make sure he eats and that he's wearing something that isn't rags. Be his friend. He needs more of those.

If we never see each other again, my lady, please know this: I love you. Given the choice, I would live my life by your side. Not as a lover, but as the dearest friend of my heart. If we are to be parted, please know that you were loved, unreservedly and wholeheartedly, and that you still are, wherever I may be.

I'm sure you're furious with me right now. What right did I have to disappear when we'd only just found each other? But I did it for us. To secure our future and to make sure that we'd be safe from the Mantis from this point on.

I don't like living in fear.

My money, everything I own, is yours of course. Use it. Eat something, idiot. Make sure you have clothing that isn't the next thing to rags. I didn't make all those sacrifices just to make you a scientist—although that was part of it—but also to make a safe and secure future for you.

Take care of Noriko for me. She's the only person in this world I love half as well as you and I worry about her without me. She'll need a friend. Be that friend.

I need your help.

Noriko-hime and I had a terrible quarrel last night after I returned from being missing. It was mostly my fault. But she stormed out from her room at the end of it. I thought I'd give her time to come back, but she hasn't yet. I'm worried about her, but I can't leave my little brother. He'd been out in the cold and the rain without sleep for days when I brought him back to the embassy and I need to be there when he finally wakes up.

So I need you to go find her for me, find her and make sure she doesn't anything stupid. If you have any regard for her at all, if you honor your imperial families who set up this match... find her. Bring her back if you can.

I've never liked you much, I will not lie about that, and so perhaps I don't have the right to presume upon you for this favor. I don't care. This isn't for me. This is for Nori. Please, if you have any sense of duty, go find your betrothed. Prove to me that I have long been wrong about you.
